The Gold Fish Myth

I recently heard someone say this and that made me do a bit of research into this issue of falling attention span of we Humans. Yes, these days we have lots of distractions that could reduce the attention span of a normal individual but 8 seconds is bit too much to accept. Thus, I came across this interesting article that debunks the Goldfish myth which is “According to some research, the average human attention span is now eight seconds, less than that of the goldfish with nine”. The article is a cripy three minutes read and would be an interesting for someone in the field of Advertising and marketing or any other curious souls out there. And I was happy that the article also talks about poor Gold Fish which is not as bad as it was potrayed and this ‘goldfish fact’ was entirely fabricated.

What else?. I have read elsewhere that Gold Fish can actually hold memories upto 5 months and have a sense of time and routine. They keep track of time and it was noticed that they get excisted in the morning or a certain time of a day when they are likely to be fed by the owner. There are instances of a Gold Fish getting so much excited by seeing their owner, walking to them and in expectation of food being served, have jumped out of the water.
These beautiful, active creatures are best grown in outdoor water ponds or indoors with an aquarium which can hold 200 liters of water or more. When taken proper care and provided right environment, they can live for decases with the record being held by a 49 yr old goldfish. So much more can be written about these wonderful creatures but, I will stop here by quoting – Emeritus John Farrington, “Sometimes God’s creation does not yield to scientific research without great effort and our results are not always what we would like or predicted.”
